DOMAINE D'AUBIGNY

Aubigny estate

A tenant farm belonging to Maizières Abbey, founded in 1132

History and Terroir

200 years before the prestigious Clos de Vougeot was given its walls, the Cistercian monks created the Abbey of Maizières. Following their tradition, they established a tenant farm in the commune of Aluze, at a place called "Aubigny".

This exceptional 200-hectare site benefits from numerous water sources and renowned agricultural land, producing wines of very high quality.

Over the centuries, Aubigny has acquired a winery of exceptional size. In 2021, we decided to take over this abandoned jewel and breathe new life into it.

The vineyard

20 hectares of vines make up this exceptional estate, spread over a single plot of 18.5 hectares:

- Rully Village "Fromange" (northern part on 11.10 ha),

- White Burgundy "Pièce de Rully" on 3.44 ha,

- Burgundy with two exceptional monopolies: "l'Ouche de la Maison" (red on 0.66 ha) and "le Grand Près d'Aubigny" (white on 1.80 ha),

- Bourgogne rouge et blanc " Les Lavières " on the commune of Aluze (southern part on 1.53 ha),

- Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin (1.5 ha) - the jewel in the domain's crown.

Winemaking philosophy

We offer a range of wines rooted in tradition but with a modern twist:

- Traditional ageing in Burgundy barrels

- Modern ageing in 50HL tuns

- Innovation with 15HL terracotta jars

Our respectful approach :

- No enzyming to preserve the authenticity of the fruit

- Minimal sulphiting only after analysis, post-malolactic fermentation

- Whole harvest vinification for reds, depending on the quality of the harvest

Our vintages

Vintage 2022 - Our first vintage

A founding year of exceptional conditions

The mild winter of 2021/2022 allowed an early start to the vegetative cycle. A few frosts in April caused limited damage before summer temperatures accelerated flowering from the end of May, two weeks ahead of normal. Despite a few hailstorms at the end of June, the scorching summer conditions and the saving rain in mid-August enabled the grapes to be harvested at their best from late August to September.

This first harvest, of remarkable quality, gave our first cuvée a very special aura. The white wines are particularly aromatic.

Available: White Burgundy aged 24 months in 50HL tuns - confidential production

Vintage 2023 - The test of hail

When nature tests our resilience

The year got off to a good start: a mild winter delayed the vegetative cycle slightly, but excellent conditions in May led to sustained growth, with flowering in early June and an early harvest in early September. Everything pointed to a generous vintage of fine quality.

But on 13 August, a violent hailstorm hit the estate, destroying 90% of our harvest. Only a protective hill miraculously spared our precious Champs Martin and a few rare plots of Rully Chardonnay. This ordeal teaches us humility in the face of the elements and strengthens our determination.

Available: Rully Blanc and Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin - cuvées de la résistance

Vintage 2024 - Rebirth

The art of transcending adversity

After the terrible year of 2023, we were hoping for a more clement 2024. Alas, the vagaries of the weather punctuated the entire season, having a major impact on the harvest but fortunately leaving the bunches well aerated, a guarantee of fine concentration.

This is where the winemaker's expertise comes into its own: meticulous plot-by-plot selection, followed by meticulous vinification work, enabled us to express the full potential of this fine raw material. It was a major challenge, but the result rewards us with delicious wines, both red and white.

Range available :

- Bourgognes Blancs: matured in terracotta jars, they have a straightforward, racy character, the pure expression of our terroir.

- Rully: matured in 50HL tuns for greater volume on the palate, a perfect balance between tradition and modernity.

- Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin: vinified from whole harvests to preserve its finesse, this wine for laying down needs a few good years for its tannins to become rounded. Traditionally matured in 2nd and 3rd wine barrels.
