Visite des carrières de Fontaines

Quarried since Gallo-Roman times, they were used in the construction of the gates of Autun and, in the Middle Ages, in the creation by the famous sculptor Gislebertus of the masterpiece of Romanesque art, "The Temptation of Eve", which can be seen in the Rolin Museum in the same town. The site offers a guided tour recounting the history of the quarrymen and stonemasons who worked here. The tour ends with a visit to the "Maison du Patrimoine" (Heritage Centre), where you can see the tools and creations of these "stone trades", including an original marble by Fontenay sculptor François Protheau, "L'Innocence et l'Amour" (Innocence and Love).
