In 2015, there were six wells in the municipal public domain.
In days gone by, there were numerous water springs in the commune, particularly between the Chemin des Epraillons and the Rue de la Fontaine Berthillier, on the west-east slope.
A stone-covered pipe allowed the water to drain away where the rue des sources now stands.
With the urbanisation of the area and the construction of the A6 motorway, storms caused major flooding. To remedy the situation, in 1988 the local council drilled a channel under the rue des sources and the Carmel, and built a canal to allow the water to flow into the Saône.
Over the centuries, for reasons of comfort and safety, man has exploited the groundwater by digging wells.
A dowser was called in to identify the best places to build a well. In Saint-Martin-Belle-Roche, there were many communal and private wells. Some of them are still visible and can be discovered on walks through the village.
Very often, communal wells served a district or a group of dwellings. In 2015, there were six wells in the public domain.
