Musée de préhistoire de Solutré
Just a stone's throw from the Roche de Solutré, the museum presents collections from one of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe.
On the Solutré Pouilly Vergisson Grand Site de France, at the foot of the Roche de Solutré, the Prehistory Museum presents collections from one of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe. This hunting ground, frequented by man for over 50,000 years, bears witness to human occupation on an exceptional scale.
Discovered in 1866, this major prehistoric site plays a part in the chronological structuring of this period. It gave its name to the Solutrean culture, which dates back to the Last Ice Age. The weapon points and knives known as laurel leaves represent the apogee of flintknapping techniques, making this site a major archaeological reference today.
The Archaeological Park completes the visit to the museum. This signposted trail features 8 key points covering geology, hunting techniques, the landscape in prehistoric times, the discovery and first excavations on the site, contemporary excavations, the site and its remains.
