Dun et la vallée du Mussy
Departure : Viaduct of Mussy-sous-Dun. Pass under the viaduct. After 50 meters, turn left and go up to the point N°2 " Le Fournay " a magnificent point of view on the valley of Mussy. At " la Combe " point N°3 turn left and go up through woods and fields to point N° 5 " Dunet ".
From there, you can continue your walk to the top of the Dun mountain. There you will find a Romanesque chapel, built in 1898 by the Count of Rambuteau, which is open to the public during the summer. Inside, there are many works of art: a 15th century statue of the Virgin Mary, a 16th century altarpiece of the Nativity, a stone pedestal, a 16th century monstrance, a 15th century Spanish monstrance containing relics of the Infant Jesus of Prague and of Saint Bruno. A magnificent panorama spreads out at your feet on the Charolais, the Beaujolais, the Roannais.
Otherwise continue in the wood, pass the point N°6 " Le Corchat ", go down and cross the village of Anglure Sous Dun, point N°8, go down again in the valley, admire the restored mill, turn to the right, go up, you go along a wood, on your left. On the right, at the bottom of a meadow, a small pond. In season, enjoy the singing of the frogs. At the end of the path, turn left and go up to the place called "les Taillis" N°9, turn right, pass in front of the waste disposal center and then under the railway line, the line connecting Lyon to Paray-le-Monial, continue until you reach the Mussey Cross, one of the most original in the commune, it is mounted on a three-step staircase. Its articulations: pedestal, shaft of the cross itself, are all three decorated with refined sculptures. Turn left towards Chauffailles. At the sign " Route de Mussy ", point N°10, you have two possibilities; either change circuit by turning left (circuit N°2) or go straight ahead to continue your walk. At the next signpost, point N°11, turn right or go straight on for a visit of Chauffailles.
Go to the point N°12 " En Forenne ", which connects us to the circuit N°4, turn on your right, cross a small wood until the place called " les Murs ", point N°13, take the D316, turn left, you cross the river " le Mussy " continue until the " Carrefour de la fabrique "at the "Carrefour de la fabrique" point N°14, turn left, leave the D316 and then right, start the ascent to reach "La Madone" point N°15, take a break at the foot of the Madone and admire the landscape that offers itself to your eyes on the Mussy valley and the mountains in the distance.
Then go back down to the point N°16 " village of Mussy-sous-Dun ". You can visit the church, which has preserved the original late Romanesque choir, 12th century, with its lightly sculpted capitals and round arches. It has not been possible to find the name of the architect of the nave built around 1840. The tower of the bell tower is strangely located in the extension of the axis of the choir. Go back down the street which joins the foot of the viaduct by passing under the arches, end of your walk, take advantage of the leisure area to admire this superb work of art.
