Bibracte

Buried beneath the Morvan jungle atop Mont Beuvray lay one of the most powerful Gallic cities. Reawakened in the 19th century, the ancient city is gradually re-emerging in a setting of 1000 hectares of forest classified as a Natural Site.

At the start of the walk around this Grand Site de France, the reconstruction of the monumental gateway to the oppidum gives an idea of the 6.5 km of ramparts that encircled it.

On this historic site, where Vercingetorix was elected chief of the chiefs, the natural megalith of the Wivre stone is said to mark its location. The wild scenery and strange twisted beech trees give off an atmosphere conducive to legends.

Following the thread of the ancient ramparts, the nature walk alternates between archaeological sites and exceptional views of the Morvan countryside.
