Grand Site de France Solutré Pouilly Vergisson
The Solutré Pouilly Vergisson Grand Site, between cliffs, vineyards, villages, biodiversity and prehistory.
At the heart of the Solutré Pouilly Vergisson Grand Site de France are the majestic formations of the Roche de Solutré, the Roche de Vergisson and the aptly-named Mont de Pouilly, which give this unique landscape its spectacular character.
At the foot of the Roche de Solutré is the Musée de préhistoire de Solutré, with its exceptional collections of prehistoric artefacts and its archaeological park, and the Maison du Grand Site, which offers a landscape interpretation centre, permanent exhibitions, a friendly café and practical information to help you organise your visit.
The Grand Site also offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking and cycling trails.
The site boasts an exceptional landscape, with the Roche de Solutré and the Roche de Vergisson, emblematic limestone cliffs dominating the vineyards, internationally renowned vineyards such as Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran, a mosaic of natural environments including limestone grasslands, forests, hedged farmland and Natura 2000 sites, as well as wine-producing villages and a characteristic small built heritage, such as cadoles, washhouses and churches. Some of these structures are emblematic of dry-stone construction techniques, which are listed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The site's rich biodiversity, characterised by the presence of rare species and remarkable plant associations, is recognised at European level. The Roches de Solutré and Vergisson and the Mont de Pouilly are protected under Natura 2000. Small Konik Polski horses play an active role in preserving the biodiversity of the limestone grasslands by grazing the meadows, thereby helping to prevent them from becoming overgrown.
